It is common in science for measures of central tendency (means, medians) to be analysed to examine for general patterns and for any individual variation to be ignored or treated as noise around the reliable average response. However, the study of individual variation in physiological and behavioural performance is important since natural selection operates at the level of the individual. For labile traits to be of selective importance, individuals must show repeatability and consistency in performance. In this presentation, individual variation in, and repeatability of escape responses in scallops will be presented.
