Camouflage is a classic example of natural selection and in many animals is achieved through colour change to match the substrate. I will discuss recent experiments we have conducted with crabs, especially shore crabs in the UK, to understand their intraspecific variation and ability to match different habitats through camouflage. I will discuss how they use colour change and plasticity over a wide range of time scales, and how this influences their extreme levels of polymorphism.
