With the purpose to transfer scientific information to the general public, CEBIMar offers a regular service of guided tours for visitor groups of variable educational level and social background, with emphasis on school and undergraduate groups, either public or private.
Guided tours include:
- a visit to the sandy beach and rocky shore habitats, presenting broad ecological aspects of marine environments, their major threats and ways that have been attempted to mitigate environmental impacts.
- a visit to tank rooms where living organisms are maintained in circulating seawater. Visitors can touch different invertebrate species and learn their natural history.
Visits to the shore depend on weather and tidal conditions and can be canceled without previous notification.
CEBIMar is included in an environmental protected area. Therefore, hunting, fishing and collecting are not allowed at surrounding beaches, rocky shores and rainforest areas, which are only used for non-destructive observational and experimental scientific research.
A minimum of 10 people per visit is requested. Over 20 people groups can be divided and toured the same day, but at different time. No waiting spots are available at the center, and, therefore, we encourage participants to plan visits to other interesting sites, outside CEBIMar.
Visits should be scheduled in advance. Individual visitors can sign up for one of the pre-programmed guided tours. Groups may schedule their visits by filling up an online form. A confirmation is sent after checking availability.
This service is free. Visits take place from Monday to Friday (except on holidays), usually from 9am to 2pm, and take about 2 hours.
