A exposição “Vida, Mar e Muita História pra Contar” participou da 62a Reunião Anual da Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC), como parte integrante do stand do CNPq na Feira de Ciência e Tecnologia, do Ministério de Ciência e Tecnologia, na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), de 25 a 30 de julho de 2010.

Nesta edição, a exposição também ofereceu atividades interativas e educativas. Além da mostra de painéis, o público geral e estudantil teve contato com amostras de fósseis, caixas táteis e jogos interativos para várias faixas etárias.

Segundo dados da SBPC, cerca de 6000 pessoas/dia circularam pela Feira de Ciência e Tecnologia.

São Sebastião, São Paulo, Brazil (2008)

In its inaugural exhibit, in the city of São Sebastião (São Paulo), home of CEBIMar-USP, the exhibition “Life, the Sea, and Many Stories to be Told” offered a series of interactive and educational activities in conjunction with the poster session.

Volunteer monitors, previously selected, hosted the general public and students. These monitors received training with lessons in theory, and workshops on the scientific content of the material and of the pedagogical practices suggested by the exhibition.

With special opening hours for students, by means of previously scheduled visits, we developed guide books and specific activities for each school level, working with each group of students in accordance with its educational profile, and with the educator’s interests. This special program was offered to 11 schools, from primary to undergraduate courses, with a total of 238 students and 21 educators. The participating schools were from the cities of São Sebastião, Ilhabela, Caraguatatuba, Ubatuba and São Paulo.

The students and other visitors could appreciate the sculptures of plastic artist Bahamondes, observe fossil samples and cleared and stained fishes, touch intriguing anatomical parts of marine animals (including blue whale and dolphin vertebrae, turtle plastron, ray eggs, sea urchin skeleton, giant seashells, and barnacles), and participate in interactive activities (board games, drawing, puzzles, and black boxes for touching experiments). Marine tanks for observation and interaction with live animals were accessible only to student visitors.

The building of the Secretariat for Culture and Tourism of São Sebastião (SECTUR) was chosen for hosting the exhibition due to its accessible facility, but since it is a historical building, the marine tanks could not be kept at SECTUR. For each school visit, CEBIMar-USP’s technicians transported marine tanks to SECTUR with marine animals collected previously at beaches nearby, and at the end of the visit the tanks were taken back to CEBIMar-USP and the animals were returned to the sea.
